Tips for Recovering After Dental Implant Surgery

If dental implants are the right pathway forward for you -- or if you’ve already had the procedure done -- these tips can help you protect your oral health while you heal:

  1. Avoid unnecessary pressure. This includes blowing your nose, chewing tough foods, or drinking through a straw. Doing so can damage your stitches or even increase the possibility of failure. For your first two weeks, you might be put on a diet of pureed or finely chopped foods, and adhering to it is the key to a successful recovery.
  2. Don’t smoke or use chewing tobacco. They can drastically increase failure risk and cause other health problems that make healing harder.
  3. Rinse regularly. For your own comfort and the health of your implants, spend the first two or three minutes of every hour rinsing with half a teaspoon of salt, half a teaspoon of baking soda, and eight ounces of water.
